Hand Canon

This is a Thompson Center Contender. Though it is wearing a 223 barrel in the picture, barrels of other calibers are easily changeable. I've got 30-30, 357, 44 Mag, 7x30 Waters and 45-70 barrels for it. Shall we say firing the 45-70 is sporty? Yeah, a very firm grip is highly recommended. With the pictured 223 barrel it's amazingly accurate, it will shoot within a dime (not pre-64 hopefully) at 100 yards.

The trigger has been worked.

I've got the contender with the 30-30 barrel . Would love to get some extra barrels in the future starting with the 223 .
got mine a few years ago after loosing use of my left arm .
For one hand use on deer in the brush its a great gun to have round here . 100 yards or less with no rest keeps about a 2 inch pattern.

note , never turn your back on someone that says , oh yes I know how to shoot one of those , inlaw said that and then tried to use the scope like a rifle and needless to say left one heck of a cut across the bridge of his nose .

One reason the .45-70 is so huge is that it originally was packed with black powder -- best not load it up too much with modern smokeless propellants. Same for the 45 Long Colt...

45-70 can be rough on a shoulder ....i cant imagine what it would be like on a wrist.

I load my own for most everything I shoot including the 45-70. Just for plinking I'll make some 250-300 grain cast bullets loaded to around 1500 fps; the recoil is noticeable but not intimidating. The full strength loads, 300-350 grain @ 1900-2000 fps are not for fun. Don't let you friends or even enemies shoot that pistol and that load.

The load would work with black bear, moose, wild hogs and most anything else out there. For dangerous game, since this is a single shot pistol, have backup. I can load it in just a couple of seconds buy I would prefer not to have to. A fumbled round could ruin you whole day.

But when you swap over to the 223 barrel, you can shoot it all day long.

Loaders who just stuff a case full of some appropriate seeming powder don't last very long. Somewhere between 35 and 41 grains of a relatively fast powder like 4198 or 3031 works in the 45-70 and that leaves a lot of empty space. Fill that case with any modern powder and you have a weapon but it is now a claymore.
